Safetyforum.com Advisory
Firestone Wilderness AT & ATX Tires What You, Firestone and Ford Should Do
MAY 22 -- Ford's announcement
that it will replace millions of Firestone tires will cause a rush on Ford
dealerships that will strain capacity and cause replacement delays.
What Ford Should Do
To ensure adequate consumer
notification, protection and full public accountability, Ford should cooperate
with NHTSA to conduct this campaign as an official safety recall.
Safetyforum.com reiterates
its safety advisory, first issued in August 2000, that all Firestone Wilderness
AT and ATX tires should be replaced immediately. Further: The urgency of replacing
Firestone Wilderness AT and ATX tires is greatest in hot southern states.
These tires are an especially lethal combination if they are on Ford Explorers
which are 4 times more likely than other SUV's to roll over when tires
fail.
What You Should Do
If your Ford dealership
is not able to replace your tires immediately, have your tires replaced
elsewhere. Save the tires and the receipt and seek reimbursement
from Ford. Click here for Ford's
Refund Form.
Do not, under any circumstances,
take a long trip in any vehicle equipped with Firestone Wilderness AT or
ATX tires.
What Firestone Should Do
Firestone should immediately
recall all remaining Firestone Wilderness AT and ATX tires regardless of
the tire size or where it was made.
If you have Firestone Wilderness
AT or ATX tires on a vehicle other than a Ford, have your tires replaced.
Save the tires and the receipt to seek reimbursement from Firestone when
the tire maker, voluntarily or under orders from NHTSA, recalls the tires that are on non-Ford
vehicles.
