SAFETYFORUM.COM:
NHTSA To Stop Publishing Database
of Firestone Complaints

OCT 17 -- NHTSA reported today that it has now received more than 3,500 complaints or Firestone Wilderness and ATX tire failures that include more than 500 injuries and 119 deaths.

The agency will no longer release spreadsheets of its Ford/Firestone defect investigation reports database. Safetyforum.com and others have used these spreadsheets to ferret out significant pieces of information that otherwise goes unreported. Last month Safetyforum.com used the data bases to discover that tires made in Wilson, North Carolina and other Firestone facilities have more reported failures than recalled tires made in Decatur. The spreadsheets also reveal the overwhelming representation of Ford Explorers in failures, rollovers, deaths and injuries.

NHTSA spokesman Tim Hurd expressed the agency's concern that there may be duplicate reports of incidents in their growing number of citizen complaints. "Releasing the spreadsheets does not further our defect investigation," he said.
