NHTSA Tire Complaints Undermine
Firestone's Decatur Strategy

AUG 16 -- CBS correspondent Sharyl Attkisson reports tonight that a preliminary assessment by NHTSA reveals that approximately one third of the Firestone tire failures that agency investigators have been able to confirm involved tires that were 16" tires or not made at Firestone's Decatur facility. This ratio is consistent with a preliminary review of Firestone tire litigation conducted last week by Little Rock, Arkansas, attorney Tab Turner. Of the 779 reports of tire failures that NHTSA has received, agency investigators have been able to establish the tire size or plant of manufacture for 203. Of those 203 confirmed reports, the agency has established that 132 involved tires that were not included in Firestone's recall.

At a press conference earlier this week, Turner led the call for Firestone and Ford to release all of the data that they have regarding production, failures, death and injuries associated with these tires.
