Family's SUV Overturns, Killing 1 Child (12/20/04)
MIAMI -- A ride on Alligator Alley turned fatal for one family when its SUV overturned, killing one child and seriously injuring others in the family.
A Ford Excursion carrying a family of seven was mangled. Its roof caved in.
The family's possessions were scattered across the grassy median on alligator alley.
For unknown reasons, the driver lost control of the vehicle and crossed the center median of Interstate 75. The vehicle rolled off and resting on the westbound lanes.
Three children and their father were airlifted to Broward General Medical Center in critical condition.
A 6-year-old girl died on the scene. Her mother, who was also injured, tried desperately to save her.
Investigators have not said whether speed was a factor. They are looking into all possibilities, including tire failure.
Everyone in the vehicle was wearing a seatbelt.
